To formally become a Zen Buddhist, one must receive the precepts in a formal ceremony officiated by the Zen priest. Observance of the precepts- together with Dhyana (zazen) and Prajna (wisdom)- forms the three inseparable aspects of Zen Buddhist training, and builds a foundation upon which to focus and deepen practice.
